Steps to Take After Getting Injured at Work

Khairunnisa Hemani • September 23, 2021

I had an injury at work, what do I do now? We never expect incidents like this to happen until they do, and we are often left confused about what next steps to take. It is even more crucial to seek help if your work relies on your physical mobility.

If you are an employee working in Ontario, a variety of help is available to you. It is common for injured workers to need physiotherapy, which is usually covered under the provincial Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) regulations. This article will guide you through the steps you should take if you get injured at work and provide injury at work advice.

Report the Injury to Your Employer

First and foremost, seek help from your coworkers for first aid and report the incident to your employer immediately. If the injury requires a hospital visit, your employer’s responsibility is to get you the assistance you need. Your employer will also need to fill out the proper workplace injury incident report.

Tell Your Doctor Your Injury Is Work-Related

Once you meet with your doctor, tell them that your injury is work-related. They also need to fill out the appropriate paperwork. Ask your doctor if you require additional healthcare beyond the initial care for your injury.

Your employer may have an insurance plan that will offer you various healthcare benefits. Healthcare costs such as physiotherapy may not be covered by OHIP. Don’t delay your medical claim to receive the healthcare benefits available to you.

See Our Physiotherapist and the Clinic Will Fill Out the Paperwork

If you were injured at work in Ontario, you need to report your injury to your employer as well as to the WSIB as soon as possible. The proper form required is available on the WSIB website after which you will have 6 months to claim benefits.

You may choose to go directly to our physiotherapist who will complete the forms for your WSIB claim. You will receive a WSIB claim number and contact information for a WSIB adjudicator. Once it is approved, you will be notified.

Delta Physiotherapy & Rehab can assist you during the process to ensure all the right paperwork is completed. As soon as your claim is approved, our physiotherapist will assess your injury to determine which care is available to you and file the necessary paperwork to the WSIB.

WSIB Will Cover Physiotherapy Treatments For 6 Weeks

A WSIB claim will cover the health costs of physiotherapy for a duration of 6 weeks. Our physiotherapist will determine the best treatment plan for you, considering your health needs and what will be covered by the benefits.

Treatment is usually more intensive in the first sessions and then gears towards maintaining the results. This will allow you to safely and smoothly transition back to your normal life.

The Clinic Will Communicate to the Workplace

After ensuring that you are fit to work, our physiotherapist will discuss strategies with you to ensure a safe return to work. Returning to work after an injury can be daunting, but our physiotherapist will make this stage of rehabilitation easier for you.

With a back-to-work plan set, our physiotherapist will communicate with your employer to let them know you are ready to work again.
