Understanding Frozen Shoulder/Adhesive Capsulitis

A woman is holding her shoulder in pain.

Frozen shoulder, medically termed adhesive capsulitis, is a debilitating condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. While seemingly innocuous at first, it can significantly impede daily activities and lead to a decreased quality of life. Understanding its causes, recognizing its symptoms, and exploring treatment options, particularly through physiotherapy, are crucial steps towards managing this condition effectively.

What can cause adhesive capsulitis?

The precise cause of frozen shoulder remains elusive, but certain risk factors have been identified. Individuals aged 40 to 60, especially women, are more prone to developing it. Additionally, those with certain medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or cardiovascular disease are at an increased risk. Shoulder immobility due to injury, surgery, or prolonged immobilization can also predispose one to frozen shoulder.

What are the symptoms of frozen shoulder?

The hallmark symptom of frozen shoulder is progressive stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. Initially, individuals may notice mild discomfort and restricted movement. Over time, the shoulder becomes increasingly stiff, making routine tasks like reaching overhead or behind the back challenging. The pain tends to worsen at night, disrupting sleep patterns and exacerbating the overall discomfort.

What do we do to help you?

At Delta Physiotherapy and Rehab, we use a combination of manual therapy, electrotherapy, laser therapy, shockwave therapy, and strength training to help you get back to optimal shoulder function. The modalities we use help to  relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue healing. We do hands-on techniques such as joint mobilization and soft tissue massage that help alleviate pain, improve joint mobility, and break down adhesions within the shoulder capsule. We will also provide you with specific stretching exercises aimed at improving shoulder flexibility and reducing stiffness. These exercises target the affected muscles and joint capsule to gradually restore range of motion. We also prescribe exercises specifically tailored to your needs to help stabilize the shoulder joint and improve muscle support. By strengthening the surrounding muscles, you will be able to better cope with the demands placed on the shoulder, reducing the risk of further injury and enhancing functional abilities.

At Delta Physiotherapy and Rehab, we know that frozen shoulder can be a challenging condition to manage, but with timely intervention and a comprehensive physiotherapy program, individuals can experience significant improvements in symptoms and regain functional mobility. By understanding the causes, recognizing the symptoms, and exploring effective treatment options like physiotherapy, individuals can take proactive steps towards overcoming the limitations imposed by frozen shoulder and reclaiming their quality of life.
