From Impact to Recovery: Concussions and Physiotherapy

Concussions are a form of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that can have lasting effects on our cognitive and physical health. They are typically caused by a sudden blow or jolt to the head, leading to the brain moving rapidly within the skull. This movement can result in chemical changes in the brain and sometimes damage to brain cells. At Delta Physiotherapy and Rehab, we are trained to help you recover from your concussion.

What are the causes and risk factors of concussions?

Concussions can occur from various incidents such as falls, car accidents, and sports injuries (especially contact sports like rugby, football, or soccer). Individuals who participate in high-risk activities or have a history of concussions are at a greater risk. Concussions are caused by the brain sliding back and forth inside of the skull. Concussions can also be caused by an acceleration or deceleration of the head. Both the magnitude of the hit, and number of hits taken over time can influence whether or not a hit will result in a concussion.

What are the symptoms of concussion?

Recognizing the symptoms of a concussion is crucial. Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, memory problems, difficulty focusing, and changes in mood or behaviour. In some cases, symptoms like seizures or loss of consciousness may occur at the time of the injury.

Brain Chemistry Changes

Concussions disrupt the brain's chemistry. After a concussion occurs, the brain goes into what’s called the neurometabolic cascade. Chemical imbalances from this, particularly involving neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, can contribute to mood swings, anxiety, or depression following a concussion. These changes can significantly impact one's quality of life if not addressed properly.

How can Physiotherapy help with Concussion Recovery?

Physiotherapy plays a vital role in concussion rehabilitation. Initially, rest and gradual reintroduction of activities are key. Physiotherapists develop customized treatment plans focusing on balance, coordination, and gradually increasing exertion levels. They also address associated issues like neck pain or vestibular disturbances. Physiotherapy helps restore physical function, reduces symptoms, and promotes brain healing. Techniques such as vestibular rehabilitation, neck stabilization exercises, and gradual exertion protocols aid in recovery. Importantly, physiotherapists work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure holistic care for patients with concussions. At Delta Physiotherapy and Rehab, our treatment plans include vestibular rehabilitation to help with balance and coordination, manual and electrotherapy to improve associated pain and stiffness, and a custom exercise program to help you regain your cardiorespiratory health and strengthen your neck and upper back. Concussions are serious injuries that demand proper understanding and management. Recognizing symptoms early, seeking appropriate medical care, and undergoing structured rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, are essential steps towards recovery. By addressing both physical and neurological aspects, individuals can regain function and improve their quality of life following a concussion.
