Simple Lifestyle Habits for Happier Joints

Khairunissa Hemani • June 1, 2021

Are you struggling with sore joints and widespread discomfort? Is it particularly difficult for you to get out of bed each morning due to joint stiffness?

If you are one of the millions of people suffering from joint pain, pain relief is probably at the top of your search bar. However, there are other options available to relieve this type of discomfort besides medication and other invasive procedures. Regardless of the cause of your pain, whether it be arthritis or an injury, there are some vital changes you should be making in your life to help mitigate the pain.

Read on to learn about three healthy habits you should be adopting in your life and how these practices can ensure your freedom from joint pain.

Exercise Regularly

This may seem counterintuitive when you think about it, but when you are in the throes of joint pain, moderate exercise has been shown to relieve inflammation and joint pain. Simple exercises such as walking and swimming will loosen your joints and restore your range of motion.

Cycling is also an excellent aerobic exercise that has very little impact on your joints. In fact, this type of exercise can improve the strength of your joints and improve your balance and stability.

In addition, techniques such as yoga, tai-chi, and pilates have all demonstrated a significant reduction in joint pain. These exercises encourage concentration, stretching, and becoming one with your body.

Choose Healthier Food Options Whenever Possible

Although this may sound surprising, eating healthy can actually help curb inflammation and reduce joint pain. Avoiding any type of processed foods or sugary treats will encourage your body to work at its optimal level. Cherries, oatmeal, and salmon are only a few examples of foods that can greatly improve your range of motion and reduce discomfort in your joints.

While you want to make sure your main meals are full of nutritious foods, you also don’t want to ruin your progress throughout the day by cheating on junk food. Make sure to go out and buy some healthy snacks, such as packets of nuts, fresh fruits, or yogurts, to tide you over until you have a main meal.

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking

Lastly, regular alcohol consumption and smoking can exacerbate inflammation in your body, often leading to joint pain. You will want to avoid these unhealthy habits as much as possible and a great way to start is by slowly substituting these habits with healthier ones.

For instance, if you are an avid cigarette smoker, try nicotine gum to help curb your craving for smoke. If you constantly find yourself pouring a drink at the end of the day, try indulging in a piece of dark chocolate or another decadent treat to lower your stress levels.

Even after cutting back just a bit, you will notice that your body is working better and your joint pain is becoming less bothersome.

Start Applying These Changes Today!

Are you ready to live a healthier, pain-free life? If so, then consider implementing the above changes in your lifestyle today. Additionally, you may want to consult with a certified physiotherapist who can help you stick to these healthy habits and guide you in restorative exercises.
